Brigitte & Peter ~ Old Broadwater Farm Busselton Wedding

Sometimes inexplicable things happen on a wedding day that you can't plan for and you may not even fully understand at the time, but you just know it's something special and you have to capture it.

During their ceremony Brigitte's mum organised a surprise for her and Peter, and gave them a box to open up. When the lid opened, a handful of monarch butterflies slowly made their way out and then flew away into the bush surrounding Old Broadwater Farm... all but one. One butterfly fluttered around the bride and groom and then rested itself on the arbour above them until the nuptials were over. In the moment it was a lovely thing to happen, and everyone enjoyed watching the beautiful butterfly. Then as the day went on we noticed there were monarch butterflies featured in the reception styling too.

Later on in the day, while I was photographing a collection of photo frames with pictures of loved ones who had passed away and so couldn't be at the wedding, I noticed one was of a young boy. At that moment a lovely lady came up to me and told me it was her son, Brigitte's cousin. She told me that they released monarch butterflies at his funeral, and that the one lingering butterfly at the wedding ceremony had made her think of him, and the fact that maybe he was there with them all at the wedding.

Isn't the universe amazing, creating such powerful symbols out of such simple things. We just have to keep our hearts and minds open enough to see them.

Other things we learned at this wedding - Eagle Rock requires dancing with your pants around your ankles, and there's a whole set dance routine to get stuck into when Nutbush starts playing ;-)

Thanks for a lovely day Peter & Brigitte, it was an honour to be there to share it with you.

Crystal & Michael ~ An Eight Willows Retreat Wedding Margaret River

We knew Crystal and Michael's wedding was going to be a fun day when they told us they were having ten in their bridal party, including some faces we'd find familiar (from Tabitha and Lance's Pemberton wedding a few years ago). Eight Willows Retreat provided a beautiful setting with the ceremony in the bush chapel and photo opportunities galore around the grounds and at the vineyard next door. The day certainly didn't disappoint, the sun shone, the group enjoyed plenty of giggles, and the guests all had a great time. Who could ask for anything more?!

Sam & Peter ~ Aravina Estate Wedding Margaret River

Sam & Pete's Big Day lived up to all expectations and was a beautifully soft, romantic, and fun day.

One of the highlights of the day for us was capturing the ladies getting ready at Smith's Beach Resort, where Sam revealed her designer Ae'lkemi dress to her bridesmaids for the first time. Sam decided that because her favourite part of a wedding is seeing the bride, she wanted it to be a surprise kept for the Big Day, and it really was a lovely moment when everyone saw her in it!

Of course the special day had so many other amazing moments as well as a lot of laughter (especially when there were a few little name blunders during the ceremony ;-)), and Sam & Pete's Bridal Party proved that even strangers can behave like old friends and helped make the occasion a great day that we were honoured to be invited to be part of.

Thank you all for making the day so much fun, now we'll leave it to our photos to tell the rest of the story. Enjoy the memories!

Xx

Libby & Jeff's Big Day ~ Bunbury Wedding Photography

Jeff & Libby did things a little differently from most and planned what we fondly called their "topsy turvy" wedding day. Starting off as a surprise, they had planned the whole wedding before their family and friends even knew they were engaged!

With their ceremony in the evening, right before their reception at Water's Edge Cafe, we started off the day with Libby getting ready at the Mantra Hotel before capturing a First Look (where Jeff got to see Libby in her dress for the first time) in the gardens and then heading out for some romantic bridal portraits at various spots around Bunbury. Of course we found some pretty spots as always, but seeing as Jeff is a train driver the memories wouldn't have been complete without doing something a little different out at Picton trains, and then we rounded out the night with some sparkler fun.

To get a little insight into their special day, watch their amazing wedding film trailer (click Play on the image below) and then check out Libby's story on the Coast to Country Weddings feature here:

Renae & Luke ~ An Abbey Beach Resort Busselton Wedding

Renae and Luke's wedding was a classically romantic (if a little chillier than expected mid October) day. The floral ceremony styled by Liz at Bouquet of Love looked absolutely stunning, and the whites and soft pinks complimented the bridesmaid dresses and classy feel of the day perfectly. Set up inside Abbey Beach Resort's atrium the floral arbour and accessories shone against the dreamy white backlight, and the soft, classy look was carried on throughout the day with Wez Enterprises doing an amazing job of bringing the resort's grand ballroom to life for the reception, and the floral centrepieces put together by Renae's friend were just beautiful too.

We love that weddings these days allow couples to add so many personal touches to the occasion, and it was really special that Renae attached her Nonna's ring to her bouquet so she could be with her walking down the aisle too.

The ceremony went perfectly and before you knew it Luke and Renae were husband and wife, so after some time for family photos we whisked them off with their bridal party for photos in the local iconic Busselton scenery. Time with the bridal party is always so much fun because the nerves are gone and everyone just lets their hair down and enjoys themselves. We had some real characters to hang out with at this wedding and had a great afternoon.

Back at the reception everyone was in the mood to party and it was so much fun to hear all the stories shared in the speeches and to watch everyone get into the awesome Paparazzi Photobooth and kick up their heels on the dance floor.

Thanks so much for sharing your special day with us, it was an honour and a privilige to be there and get to know you all over the last year.

Enjoy the memories x

Janelle & Amos’ Alverstoke Barn Brunswick Wedding

It looked like it was going to be a pretty wet day at Alverstoke Homestead for Amos and Janelle's wedding, but Janelle had her heart set on a ceremony on the steps of the old school, so thank goodness for Charmaine at Ferguson Valley Events who was happy to leave the decision to the last minute and risk setting up outside. The gamble paid off as the sun came out just in time for the start of the day and kept the rain away until the drive home.

Janelle arrived in a family friend's old Holden, which was purchased from her great grandparents and restored many years ago, so it was very special for it to be a part of the day,

The day was filled with lots of fun and family love (it was so lovely to hear Janelle's boys telling her they loved her non stop throughout the day). Janelle looked amazing in her custom made dress by Brides By Design and her soft and gorgeous hair and makeup by Jenna at Belle Couture For Hair and Makeup and Pippa Hodgins for Hair. Amos made a very dapper groom in his navy suit and traditional Maori korowai too.

Sarah & Jon ~ A Roelands Wedding

Sarah and Jon were blessed with a beautiful sunny spring day at their wedding on saturday, which was a very welcome sight after a long, wet south west winter!

The pair celebrated their wedding at Sarah's parents new home in Roelands, with Jon and the boys getting ready in one side while Sarah and the girls were in the other. After the wet weather saw the end of the plan to have the ceremony at the local park (thanks to rather a lot of mud!) it was moved to the backyard, which turned out to be a lovely spot for it with the natural bush and river in the background.

It was an early start for us, arriving at 10am to capture all the preparations before the 1pm ceremony, but luckily the trees along the river at the house and in the park provided plenty of shade from the bright midday sun.

Proof that you don't have to spend big to have a lovely wedding, Sarah DIY'd the styling for the day taking inspiration from google and instagram, and the rustic browns, whites and plum purples looked lovely in the garden setting and against the boys' grey suits. The bouquets created by Eaton's Fresh Floral Studio also suited the style perfectly, as did the cake that Sarah's cousin made. Sarah looked like a princess in her Tuscany Bridal dress (which she managed to pick up second hand on Gumtree!), and Gemma Collins and Tianna Oakley finished off her look perfectly with stunning hair and makeup.

When Sarah enquired about her wedding we bonded over dogs, and as we got to know each other in the months leading up to the wedding we discovered just how important a part of her life they are. How perfect then that she and Jon could get married in a spot where the dogs could be part of the day too!

Filming the day as well as covering the photography, we got to learn a lot about the pair and for the first time I discovered the meaning of "swipe right" - and guess what - it can end in marriage!

After a lovely ceremony and photos at the park, Sarah and Jon impressed their family and friends with a choreographed first dance before everyone enjoyed a yummy buffet and drinks under a marquee in the garden. A perfectly simple and lovely way to start their new life together.

Congratulations Sarah & Jon, just keep doing what you do because according to all your friends - it works! :-)

Aimee & Russell ~ A Caves House Yallingup Wedding

This weekend we spent a wet and windy winter's day with Aimee and Russell to celebrate their wedding. If you're going to get married in winter, Caves House is a great choice of venue with it's cosy fires and art deco heritage architecture, and it was the perfect place to shelter from the rain before we made the most of the gorgeous grounds when the sun peeked out (even just for a brief time).

The styling of the day was simple vintage with lots of handmade touches. The ladies had been busy the night before the wedding creating their gorgeous protea bouquets, and Aimee's dad had spent months growing the centrepieces which sat on top of lace mats crocheted by Aimee, little touches that personalised the reception in the Yallingup room. The venue looked classy and elegant, just as Aimee had planned.

Our blushing bride looked lovely in her Lost in Paris lace dress, which was sourced from recycled fabrics! The dress had a uniquely pretty pattern , including some gorgeous "wings" in the back. Aimee made little Maddison's super cute flower girl dress herself, and the bridesmaids outfits suited the style of the day perfectly too. The awesome Jenna at Belle Couture for Hair & Makeup finished off the ladies' look with super pretty, natural makeup, while the boys looked effortlessly dapper in their suits.

Thanks for a lovely day, we were honoured to be there to capture it for you - enjoy your beautiful memories!

Imogen & Paul ~ A Chandelier's on Abbey Wedding, Margaret River

We love it when couples celebrate their personalities in the styling of their Big Day. From the Harry Potter books in wooden crates to the fireman helmet nestled on top, Imogen and Paul added so many gorgeous little touches to make their wedding uniquely "them". We especially loved the cute figurines on the wedding cake and the choice of cars... Paul loves old classics, Imogen loves Kombis, so instead of one winning out over the other, they just had both. Down South Luxury Limo's chevy and Kape Kombi's van were a pretty unusual pair, but they looked cute together and we just loved what it said about our gorgeous couple, celebrating their differences...after all isn't that what a happy life together is all about?!

Chandelier's on Abbey provided a beautiful backdrop for the day, it looked amazing and Carleton couldn't have been any more helpful in making sure everything was perfect. We wouldn't have needed to go anywhere else all day, but being in Margaret River Imogen and Paul asked for some photos in the vines, so the team at Windows Estate very generously let us pop down the road to spend a little time there before the party back at Chandelier's, which finished off the day perfectly.

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Roberts, thank you for choosing us to capture your special day. We left feeling very lucky to have such lovely people as our clients :-)

Emma + Ben ~ A Dunsborough Wedding

We don't have favourites here at the studio, but if we did this would be one of them ;-)

If, as a woman, you ever find a man who looks at you the way Ben looks at Emma, marriage is the only answer. He must have known she was "The One" pretty early, because he never asked his sister what she thought of Emma, a story which was told during their ceremony and had us all teary eyed.

A gorgeous day from start to finish, we never had to travel more than five minutes on foot to find beautiful spots for photos on the grounds of Flametree Wines and the Wyndham Resort Dunsborough, and the day was simply filled with relaxed fun, laughter, and love <3

WA Family Photographer of the Year Finalist!

Last month I entered the WA AIPP Professional Photography Awards for the first time ever, at the behest of a good friend. I have always been a proud member of the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography), because in an industry that doesn't require a licence to practice, I believe it's important to be part of a professional body like this that holds its members accountable and gives consumers the confidence in booking a photographer who they know will be experienced, technically excellent and professional in their business practices as long as they book a pro who is AIPP accredited (to find out more about what it means to be an AIPP Accredited Photographer click here: http://aipp.com.au/about/what-is-an-accredited-professional-photographer).

So the annual AIPP Awards are in essence the pinnacle of Australian Professional Photography. Every year photographers enter images for judging by their peers, creating a great space to develop and grow as creatives. I had never entered before because the awards require a lot of time, which with a busy studio to run and two under 5's in my house is not something I have going spare. But this year I decided to get involved, and I entered the Family Category.

Let me tell you it was such a great experience and I'm so glad I took part. I travelled up to Perth to watch the judging (which is open to the public so if you are interested in photography I would highly recommend going and seeing the hugely inspiring work being created by photographers in this state) and I am very happy to say that I was awarded three Silver Awards and was a Finalist (which puts me in the top three!) for WA Family Photographer of the Year!

You can check out all the winners and their amazing work here:

http://stateawards.aipp.com.au/WA/2016-WA-awards

I'm feeling very inspired after seeing such talented work, and I look forward to thinking outside the box to create some more unique and inspiring work myself in the year to come.

Here are my Award Winning Images for 2016 with the story of each one, which all have a special place in my heart so I'm very glad to see them do well.

If you'd like to feature in your own award winning image, book your portrait with us and let's see what we can create together. Just give us a call on 08 9791 4226 or e mail studio@thephotographyboutique.com.au to book your session now!

About this image:

This image features the gorgeous Carli and Shae, who's wedding we photographed last year. When they came to meet with me about their Big Day they asked if we could forego the engagement session we usually include in our wedding pakcages, and do an underwater trash the dress shoot instead, as they have lived their whole lives in and on the water and it would have special meaning for them. So we planned and prepared and I spent an afternoon in scuba gear (with my lovely assistant Bianca) at the end of Busselton jetty and this is what we got, which I was super happy with. Evidently lots of other people liked it too as it went viral and was published around the world! I'm absolutely stoked my fellow professionals also recognise it as an award winning image, and I hope it will be the start of a new journey to always challenge myself and be up for doing something different!

We had lots of fun in the studio creating some amazing art, and this shot was actually an out take that I just fell in love with. I mean who ever gets a photo of one dog poking her tongue out at another? ;-)

About this image:

Recently a client and friend called and asked if I could take some family photos for them. Her father-in-law was not well and they were expecting Ray to only have a few months left with them. So I fit them in to a busy day of shooting and took lots of photos with the family all together. As I was leaving I noticed how many photos of his family he had in his home, so I asked him to sit in his chair amongst his loved ones and captured this shot. I'm so proud that this has achieved a Silver Award at the State Professional Photography Awards. This Award is to honour Ray who sadly passed away just a week after the shoot, and I'm very happy to have been able to capture these memories for his family before it was too late.
